Our public schools exist to raise up every student with quality learning regardless of zip code, income, or individual learning needs. We can and will do more to eliminate the opportunity gap and foster an inclusive environment that honors individual needs.
Redesigning Special Education
Our approach to special education shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all. Our goal, however, should be to integrate special needs students into the mainstream learning environment by pushing in resources and training. This is the only way we can provide special needs students with the same opportunities to build the strong community network of peer support that is critical for student mental health and well-being.
Closing the Opportunity Gap
Every policy decision made by the board must follow the charter of our public education system - to ensure the success of every student. We must also implement concrete plans to fill the opportunity gap for those who are not well-served by current policies. We must take a data-driven approach to identify trends and groups who are disproportionately affected to provide more individualized resources and attention to support those students.
